NEW TSUKUBA STEREO

This image belongs to the famous stereo image collection from the Tsukuba Stereo Data-set.

For one of the projects I'm currently working at CVLAB, I had to recreate the same scene in 3D, and take a realistic render. This is the final result of the scene I generated in Autodesk Maya 2012, and rendered with Mental Ray.

HEAD MODEL - 1

This is the first head model I've made for the research at CVLAB.

The head was entirely created in ZBrush, with some tweaking in Maya (merging vertex, adding edges, extruding, etc...) thanks to the powerful tool GoZ, which allowed me to move the model from one application to the other without having to export and import every time. Just one single click from ZBrush to Maya and viceversa. Amazing!

So I started the model creating two image planes, with the front and side photos of a colleague, and then, using transparency (without ghosting) I could adjust the geometry of the modelled head to the photo references in the image planes.

Once the basic shape of the head was adjusted, I removed the image planes and started adding details and poly painting the skin in the model, still in ZBrush, with the Spotlight tool.

Once the texture was ready, I exported it and color corrected it in Photoshop.

So now, with this virtual head created, the investigators at CVLAB can use it in their various experiments, like this one you can see here:

Thanks to this head model, we were able to take 125.000 images of our colleague's head in 125.000 different positions, without having to make him stay still for the 125.000 shoots. Can you imagine how tiring that could be for a human been? :P

MAYA MODELING AND RENDERING

I made this image last May, before joining the CVLAB. I was still learning Maya and it was my first render using Mental Ray with Physical Sun and Sky inside Maya 2011. I can see that the result is not perfect, but I really like how it ended up, so I decided to post it today :)

As I announced before, I'm working nowadays in a new computer vision project in which I will have to make a photo realistic scene for their experiments. Of course the image will be way more advance and sophisticated than this one (as you could see in previous post the modeling was much more rich and detailed).

I will soon upload some more images of my work at CVLAB, and keep posting about our developments. Until then, I hope you like this! ;)

ONLINE COURSE FOR UPV - DESIGN DECISION

A couple months ago I was asked to become the teacher of a new online course offered by my university back home UPV (Polytechnic University of Valencia) for their online training service Design Decision.

The course teaches the students to use in depth the Adobe Creative Suite programs Adobe Illustrator CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe InDesign CS5, and to make online project presentations, as the one you could see in this entry, by using CSS, HTML and other web technologies; and it is available from today in their web http://www.designdecision.upv.es/portal/index.php

NEW JOB AT CVLAB

Last month I joined Tsukuba University's Computer Vision Laboratory CVLAB as Technical Staff working as CG artist.

I am in charge of making realistic models, scenes, renders and animations, witch will be applied for the Computer Vision experiments that CVLAB is developing.

Here is a little sample of the models I've been making during this month:

All the models have been modeled inside Maya and ZBrush. This models will be textured and rendered as a whole, for the creation of a highly realistic data set for the Laboratory's experiments.

ART EXPOSITION IN TSUKUBA - DOKAN BOM

Last 17 of July, we had the great pleasure to participate in Dokan Bom's art exhibition for the Art & Yoga Candle night exhibition in Tsukuba.

It was a lovely evening, with the company of Tsukuba's finest artists by the candle light. There was good food, yoga meditation and art all around us.

BASE MESH IN MAYA

Last December I showed you an image with the process of creating a human mesh inside ZBrush, by using Zspheres. Trough that process, we could create a realistic human figure with a excellent modelling mesh, all in the same software package. Of course, if the model is meant for animation, we would need to retopologize the mesh (I will soon make a post talking about the retopologizing tools inside ZBrush).

Today, I want to show you the steps of creating a modelling mesh, this time inside Maya, by polygon modelling.

As you can see, this mesh would also need retopologizing after the modelling process, so it has the same use than creating the model directly in ZSpheres. For that reason, I find it more natural and quick to create the base mesh inside ZBrush directly, although is good to know different approaches, and compare them.

So, as you can see in the image, this model was built from a polygon cube. Using simple polygon modelling techniques, like extrude, add edge loops and so on, we can create a very simple and proportionate base mesh, for our later modelling in Zbrush. I used some planes as guides for the proportion. In this case, a 8 head measure system. It is a good idea to make extra loops in the mouth, eyes and ears areas, to have more resolution during the modelling process.

In later posts, I will upload some videos of the modelling process using this mesh as a base, to create a heroic-muscular character. For those of you who want to learn more about this techniques, I recommend purchasing Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy by Scott Spencer.

POLY MODELING IN MAYA

Continuing with the modeling exercise in Maya, this is the armor that goes with the helmet I showed you a couple days ago. This time, I've used Poly Modeling for the armor.

The armor design is based in an illustration by Chris Sanchez that comes in Eric Keller's book Mastering Maya 2011.

NURBS MODELING

This helmet is a modeling exercise made in Maya, using NURBS.

Even though modeling in NURBS might seem more difficult than Polygon modeling in a first place, the truth is it's very similar.

But in my opinion, both NURBS and Polygon modeling can get very technical and less creative that modeling in ZBrush, specially now hat they've improved the hard surface modelling.

ABOUT BABY HELL

As I announced last month, sama-sama-studio is going to focus in 3D Modelling and Illustrating.

This swap is not going to affect the Baby Hell comic we already had in progress, although it will probably delay its timing.

The comic will be divided in a total of 13 episodes; 12 will be the main story, plus one bonus story; and it will have 184 pages.

I'll make the story, drawings and color by myself, and as you can imagine, it will be a lot of work to do in one year, so there is a possibility that the comic will be released in 2012 instead.

I'll keep you posted of the progress, and I'll upload some sketches and pages from time to time for you to see how is going on.

Slowly, but surely, the comic Baby Hell will eventually see the light.

As I announced back in April 2010, the comic is expected to be ready by the end of this year (hopefully!)

Soon, I will post some sketches of Liberty and Seth, and give you more details about the project.

DIGITAL EMBROIDERY

When I modeled Ashen Blame for the 3D Max Render I took last year here, I found a very interesting application for Corel Draw, called Corel Drawings X3, that allows you to import a vector image, and it renders it in a way that looks just like a photorealistic embroidery.

This tool is very useful for all those who, in the texturing process, want to create alphets decorated with embroidery, such as military emblems or crests, or any other embroidery decoration of any kind.

In my case, for this render, I designed an emblem of a flower for Ash's coat in Adobe Illustrator, and then imported it into Corel Drawings X3. After playing a little bit with the settings I came up with a very nice looking embroidery image, that I now present to you.

Taking a closer look, you can see how real and clean the result is. The application even simulates little mistakes and differences between the stitches, to make it look so natural, it seems like made by hand.

ILLUSTRATING IN 3D

Here there's an example of illustrating with ZBrush.

I used the last model I posted, the Seven Goddesses character Zander Kain, transposed in a new pose inside ZBrush, and rendered with a variety of Sketch materials.

After the composition in Photoshop, I obtained the following:

As you can see, really neat results can be obtained by this method.

FUTURE IN 3D

For today's post I would like to make some reflexions about 3D Art, and the new direction and perspective sama-sama-studio will take in the next few months.

I am a true believer that 3D illustration is the future. And if you take a look at the history of Art and animation, you will see why.

Humans have always searched for ways of expressing themselves graphically, to preserve their history, and to be remembered.

Ever since we have knowledge of the human existence, there have been graphic evidences of our life in earth. First the haunting scenes in the rock of the caves, the carvings of hieroglyphics in the ancient Egypt, the portraits in the 16th century...

We started painting the history, for preventing it to be forgotten, but once the photography took its rightful place as the official history preserver, Art became the tool to create a new reality.

There was no need to paint the people, or the events, but to express the artist's feelings, and to create a whole new world of inspiration and imagination.

So the illustration techniques started evolving into more artistic and experimental ways.

A true revolution was the beginning of the animation. Then, the illustrations and drawing would come to live, and we could see many stories that would have been impossible to film with real world video Cameras.

Nowadays, with the evolution o the Computers and their improved computational power, we have been able to create hyper realistic illustrations in 3D, that could easily be mistaken for real photographs.

James Cameron's movie Avatar, is a clear proof of this evolution. He created a virtual three-dimensional world, and he made a movie with alien actors that can be easily believed to be real.

So here is my guess... 3D Art will eventually overcome illustration and animation, even photography!

We are tired of seeing photo commercials so photoshopped that they should probably just paint them instead of going through that much trouble.

Once the 3D Technology settles, there will be no need of any actress, or makeup artist, or photographer... Because one only person, will be able to model, texture, light and render a perfect photo realistic image of any kind.

That moment is not that far away form today... so as I believe, the 3D will become the primary way of creating new realities.

Going back to illustration and animation, we can see an increasingly number of animation films that use 3D techniques to create the backgrounds, sometimes even the characters themselves.

Not to mention that for most of the animation films that are made nowadays, the chosen technique is the 3D: Shrek, all the Pixar's movies, and the newly released Tangled, are some of the examples.

No wonder why this is happening. Instead of drawing the same character over and over through millions of frames, artists now just have to model it once, and have him in any position or angle they want, increasing the realism, and what's more important, saving time.

Art is evolving into Computer Graphics, and so must we.

I found my true inspiration in this sector of 3D art, thanks to Pixologic's brilliant ZBrush, and such other wonderful CG programs such as 3D Max and Maya.

That has lead me to reconsider the purpose of sama-sama-studio as a multi disciplinary Graphic Design Studio, to focus it into specializing in 3D, over any other kind o illustration.

So with the beginning of 2011, the studio will continue with the same Graphic Design and Illustration activities as before, only this time we will be centered in creating and experimenting with the variety and possibilities that only 3D and computer graphics can offer.

MEISHI AND LOGO DESIGN

In Japan, it is customary for everybody to have a business card, or Meishi.

Since we have moved from Spain, our old business cards were no longer of use, so I designed two twin business cards for my husband and me.

For my business card I recycled the same logo I used in the last design, that you can see here, changed the colors and gave it a minimal look.

For my husband's in the other hand, I designed a technological logo, with a robot head shape, that resembled the Seven Goddesses logo symbol for the Lightning.

And here they are :D

ZSPHERES

This is an example of modeling a human figure from ZSpheres.

For this figure, I built the ZSphere chain, and then skinned it with the classic skinning options in the Adaptive Skin Palette.

The last image shows the end result, after subdividing it 7 times and modeling the basic shapes.

In this post, I would like to talk about all the work that had to be done to achieve the character illustration of Zander Kain using ZBrush.

I began modeling the character in T Pose, so I could use the symmetry values and save some time.

After defining the basic shape of the face, I divided the model and started working in his anatomy. This is a rather strong and muscular character, so I had to add a lot of volume and muscles to the base mesh, until I got what I was looking for.

Once I had the body, I divided the mesh in HD, so I could start modeling the finer details of the skin, wrinkles and pores. And then, painted the Skin using Polypaint.

For this previews, I didn't use any renderer, just saved the screenshots as it was in the screen.

Even though it doesn't have any SSS material or any special lighting effects, the skin looked pretty good, so I started modeling the clothes.

For doing this, I extracted parts of the model's mesh as subtools, and modeled them into the clothes.

I created again HD subdivisions for making the seams and the cloths texture.

Once the model was complete, I used Transpose Master to pose both the model and it's subtools into the final pose.

Then I repeated the same steps I explained in an earlier post for rendering inside ZBrush, only this time I did use one new polypaint map for SSS Skin.

Once combined all the render passes into photoshop, I could finally obtain the final image ^_^

ZANDER KAIN

As I've been announcing this last couple days, today I'm posting the new Seven Goddesses character illustration, made entirely in ZBrush, and then combined in Photoshop.

This illustration is a remake of a previous concept illustration I made back in 2007 for the Seven Goddesses blog, this time using only Zbrush and Photoshop.

For my next entry, I will post a step by step of the creation process, from the T Pose, to the HD Detailing, Polypainting, modeling the Cloth and the Transpose, to acquire this final illustration.

ZANDER KAIN - FACE

Here we have again the model of the face I showed you a couple days ago, this time textured and rendered inside Zbrush, and then combined in Photoshop.

For the skin texture, I painted it in Zbrush using Polypaint, and then, took a bunch of renders with different materials applied on it, for making various different effects in Photoshop.

For rendering I used Zbrush's Best Preview Render, for the skin and materials. For the lighting, I just used the standard default lighting in Zbrush. I also didn't use Subsurface Scattering (SSS) for I made it later on Photoshop.

Later on, inside Photoshop, I combined some of them to make various effects and enhance the skin details. With this images ready, I composed them, using the following fusion methods and opacities:

The final result after composing them was pretty good, although it needed some retouching still.

After adding some new reflections to the eyes, drawing the eye lashes, adjusting the levels of the image and fixing some bizarre lights inside the nose, I draw a new layer of Subdermal Skin, and put it beneath the final image, lowering it's opacity to 90%.

And here we have the final image:

As you can see, we can get a pretty decent result by using only modeling and polypaint. This image was completely made inside Zbrush, using the standard default materials and lights.

-Of course, in order to achieve a more photorealistic image it is recommended to use advanced materials and lighting, real photograph skins, Subsurface Scattering and export it to Maya or 3D Max for a more accurate render-

In a couple days, I will post the final model and it's concept Art, some screen shots of the hole modeling process, and the final render.

As we came announcing during this last year, I have moved to Japan, in the city of Tsukuba.

The trip was long and exciting, and finally, I'm settled in my new location.

From here, Sama-sama-studio will keep doing what it's best at, and we will continue evolving and improving our skills and our services in the Arts and Crafts of Design.

Of course, we will continue providing our services world wide, working remotely, but with the same quality and professionalism that characterizes us.

In just a few days I will move to Japan in the city of Tsukuba, and I'm really looking forward to go! I'm so excited, living in Japan has's been my dream since I was little. Now the dream it's coming true, and I'm preparing all the stuff we have to take with us, and making all the arrangements.

In less than 20 days we will be in our new location in Japan, at Tsukuba City, 58 Km. from Tokyo; and for the occasion I've designed a new website, more dynamic and minimal than the old one, with a wide selection of sama-sama-studio's work, arranged in five specific areas: Photography, Graphic Design, Illustration, Comic and 3D.

VECTOR AND MESH PORTRAIT: SARAH ROPE

Today we present a new vector illustration we've made using an advanced technique by using vectorial meshes. For it, we used as a model for the illustration the beautiful singer Sarah Rope.

This technique consists in building the face structure by the use of the Mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. It resembles the recreation of a 3D object's mesh, only in 2D.

This is a series of underwater photos of Formentera Island's marine life I took during my visit in July 2010.

The photos were taken at 18 meters depth (59 feet) with a special underwater camera, in the area of Es Bancs, at Formentera Island, in the Mediterranean sea.

Here we have a selection of some of the concepts we made before starting Baby Hell:

This was the first drawing for the character's presentation, then we decided to make a front view of the character with shy-scared eyes and this drawing got discarded.

This was the idea we had for the Gothic room. Afterwards we decided to change the lighting to a more misty-blueish scary light.

The final character presentation, with color and a sketch of what the Gothic room would look like.

PREVIEW: ADHALEAN'S DREAM

In a couple weeks we will upload to sama-sama-studio the latest SG illustration, named Adhalean's Dream, made using digital painting techniques.

This new illustration will be drawn out of an older illustration I made back in 2008, that remained colorless.

Among with the illustration, we will upload a "How to" tutorial, showing the process of creation of the illustration, step by step from the first drawing to the final result.

The "How to" will be attached to the Tutorial section of our blog, for easier finding.

WEDDING INVITATION 2

This is a photo of the wedding invitation by sama-sama-studio and illustration by Sarah Martull we told you about back in February.

As you can see, we chose a textured paper to give the illustration a more realistic watercolor look, and great quality to the invitation, that was designed in a window shape, with the illustration in the middle, and surrounded by a poem inspired in the illustration's scene.

On the front face of the invitation, the bride's and groom's names, printed in red, with the location date and time of the special event.

For the enveloping we chose the same red as the illustration's bridge and the text type, and the names and addresses of the guest's were written in white, giving the letter a genuine look, unlike regular white envelopes, and a very christmas's touch (the wedding was in January)

CHARACTER DESIGN FOR HELL

This are the concepts of Liberty and Set you were able to see it the Baby Hell poster we posted in February, but as the poster had so many blood and textures, we decided to post this cleaner logo version of the character's design.

We have just finished the whole Goth_Lolita's introduction to Baby Hell, and now we are going to start with Liberty's introduction, and her story of how she got into the game.

We'll hopefully post some more BH news in no time!

This two pictures were taken with a Macro lens on the studio. The object is a hand-made breast-pin.

We chose it for it's beautiful colors (as you may have notice, we love pink and purple) and it's rustic metal texture, that gives the image a lot of strength and personality. It almost look like some sort of candy, you could easily eat, like those lavender candies I used to have when I was a kid.

The Big garnet flower with the purple diamond in it's center, look like raspberry jelly.

Mmmmmmmm, delicious!

BABY HELL: FIRST PAGES - COLOR

This is how the comic will look so far.

Baby Hell is a dark and sinister story of computer scientist, trapped in a survival video game.

We've tried to make the scenarios spooky and frightening, but with very distinctive Spanish-European architectural styles. For example, this first scenario, we've recreated a typical 1900's Spanish residence, with hydraulic mosaic floors, ornamental fabric walls and Gothic-baroque furniture, that matches perfectly with the girl's Neo Gothic style.

We will still have to wait until the end of next year to see the hole comic book, but don't worry, we will often update with more news about the comic to come, screenshots, wallpapers, and much more contents!

We are back and running!

During this long week of web migration (we deeply apologize for the incovenience) we have been working hard on the Baby Hell comic.

We have prepared this page to show you the process of how the comic is going so far.

This are some drawings for one of the pages.

The first pages will tell a short story with Goth_Lolita as main character, before we get to know Liberty and Seth.

In a couple days we will upload the colored version.

BABY HELL: LOGO

After a long process of experiments, we've finally made the final logo for the Baby Hell comic.

For this logo, we've decided to run away from vectors and lines, making the final result so explicit and grotesque. I'm sure some vampires would die for give it a lick :)

PC BELL

This is the design of the PC Bell, a simple computer with big colored plastic buttons for easy manipulation for kids.

It's simple design makes it efficient and very resistant in case the PC Bell is hit, or perhaps, crashed against the floor...

It is also provided with an interactive interface, that will communicate with the children, always in a childish fancy way, allowing the kids to resolve simple problems, and developing new skills, that will be essential for their growth.

SHAP IN VALENCIA

Last Thursday, February the 18th, the band SHAP performed in "Sala Matisse" club, in Valencia.

We had the pleasure of attending the show, in order to take a couple pictures and enjoy their music.

The singer, Sarah Rope was as dazzling and beautiful as ever, and was accompanied by Pau Chafer at the keyboards and Angel Celada in the drums.

Completing the quintet were Oscar Ureña (Guitar) and Natxo Tamarit (Bass)

sama-sama-studio will develop during 2010-2011 the comic Baby Hell.

Based on the story written by Sarah Martull, Baby Hell tells the story of Liberty, a computer scientist that will work as a videogame tester for a new enterprise, in order to perfect their new virtual reality creation: The survival game Baby Bell.

During the game she will have to fight her worst nightmares in order to discover who she really is...

The comic will be ready for the end of 2011. More details to come...

SOON, GUIDO WILL RETURN...

Pedro Camello's Guido el Negro will return in a new adventure: Destino de Sangre.

Last time, we left Guido in count Abbon's castle, running away after stealing the Spear of Fate, and leaving Erika all by her self with the fearsome Berserkers.

In Guido el Negro: Destino de Sangre, we resume the last episode of Guido's adventures, and continue with the plot, saving Erika, and travelling to Dorestad to sell the relic. Although it wont be so easy, for they will meet the evil Bellona and her squad, and will have to face the evil forces of Klingsor, the maleficent dark wizzard, Duke of Cápua.

The comic has 56 fully colored pages, plus some more of additional contents. It will have album format, and will be available from mid-2010.

During the 3rd, 4th and 5th of February was held the VIII edition of Valencia's Fashion Week, at the "Feria de Muestras", Pavilion 8.

In this event participated a total of 20 designers, among which may be emphasized Alex Vidal, Higinio Mateu, Ion Fiz, Yiyi Gutz, Tonuca, and others.

Sama-sama-studio was pleased to attend the event as Graphic Press.

After a day of fashion parades, we went to the Off Zone and the final party at the club Mya.
